Limoncello

Unable to delineate a true story of the Limoncello of Sorrento, contending its' paternity are in fact not only in Sorrento but also in Amalfi and Capri and its' story also interweaves with numerous legends and anecdotes.

We must admit, however, the island of Capri has an edge over the others, because a family of Capri was in fact the first to register the trade mark "Limoncello" now known in every corner of the world.

There is a story that tells us about a guest house on Blue Island, it is small and very characteristic featuring a wonderful garden with lemon and orange trees. Maria Antonia Farace would create an exceptional liquor that she would offer to all her guests. Maria Antonia passed on her recipe to her grandson Max Channel that after the war opened a restaurant near the Villa of Axel Munthe. The restaurant served his grandmothers famous Limoncello recipe. The recipe was also passed down to his son. Massimo Canale, also decided to have a small artisan production of Limoncello. It was he who registered the trademark in 1988.

Despite the registration of the trade mark, along the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento there are other stories to be told. Some say that in fact all the families of Sorrento were the ones that offered their guests a bit of that precious yellow liquor starting in the early 1900s. It is also said that this liquor actually has even more ancient origins and that it was used from immemorial time by the fishermen of Amalfi not to feel the bitter cold of winter.

What is the truth? Impossible to say with precision.

What is certain is that the Limoncello is a liqueur with an intense flavor, a flavor that can only be achieved with lemons from this stretch of the coast. Whether the paternity is in Amalfi, Sorrento or Capri, it does not matter. Limoncello also has now been around the world, a famous liquor that everyone envies and that then we can not be more proud of.

Our personal opinion? Limoncello of Sorrento is unique and inimitable, seeing is believing:
